❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good GPA in Australia?
On the 7-point scale, a GPA of 5.0–5.9 (Credit range) is considered solid. A GPA of 6.0–6.9 (Distinction) is excellent, and 7.0 is a perfect GPA. For competitive postgraduate programs, a GPA of 5.5+ is often preferred. Many employers and scholarship programs require a minimum of 5.0 (Credit average).
How are credit hours used in the GPA calculation?
Credit hours reflect the weight of each subject. A subject worth 6 credit points has twice the impact on your GPA as one worth 3 credit points. The formula is: GPA = Sum(grade_points × credit_hours) ÷ Sum(credit_hours).
Do failed subjects count toward my GPA?
Yes. A failed subject (grade point = 0) counts as 0 points multiplied by its credit hours, dragging your GPA down significantly. Some universities allow grade replacement if you repeat the subject — check your institution's policy.
Is a 4.0 GPA the same as in the US system?
No. Australia uses a 7-point scale where 7.0 is the highest (equivalent to 4.0 in the US system). A Pass (4 pts) in Australia is roughly equivalent to a 1.0–2.0 in the US. When comparing to US institutions or scholarships, clarify which scale you are using.
