Frequently Asked Questions
What is a GPA on the Australian 7-point scale?
Australian universities typically use a 7-point GPA scale where High Distinction (HD, 85%+) = 7 points, Distinction (D, 75–84%) = 6 points, Credit (C, 65–74%) = 5 points, Pass (P, 50–64%) = 4 points, and Fail (<50%) = 0 points. The GPA is calculated by weighting each grade by the credit points of that subject.
How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Use the Final Grade Calculator. Enter your current grade, the desired final grade, and the weight of the exam. The formula is: Required Exam Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight/100)) ÷ (Exam Weight/100). If the result is over 100%, the goal may not be achievable.
What is a weighted grade and why does it matter?
A weighted grade accounts for the fact that different assessments (exams, assignments, quizzes) contribute different percentages to your final mark. For example, if your mid-semester exam is worth 30% and you scored 70%, and your final exam is worth 70% and you scored 80%, your weighted grade is 0.3×70 + 0.7×80 = 77%, not the simple average of 75%.
How many hours per week should I study?
A commonly used rule of thumb is 2 hours of study per credit hour per week. For a typical 3-unit subject at medium difficulty, that's about 6 hours per week. Use the Study Hours Calculator to get a personalised recommendation based on your number of subjects, difficulty level, and weeks until exams.
Are these calculators suitable for TAFE and VET students?
Most calculators — percentage, average, standard deviation, budget, and deadline planner — are suitable for any student. The GPA calculator uses the university 7-point scale, which differs from TAFE competency-based assessment. The Final Grade and Pass Mark calculators work for any percentage-based grading system.
