❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How is the recommended study time calculated?
The calculator uses: Recommended hours per subject per week = Difficulty × 2. For example, a subject rated 3/5 difficulty needs about 6 hours per week. Total recommended = subjects × hours per subject. This is based on common university study guidelines of 2–3 hours per credit hour per week.
What if I have less time available than recommended?
The calculator will show a tight or insufficient schedule warning. In this case, prioritise subjects with the highest exam weight or lowest current grade. Focus on past exam papers, key concepts, and spaced repetition rather than re-reading all materials.
Should study hours increase closer to exam time?
Yes. Many students follow a ramp-up model: normal pace in weeks 1–4, then increase by 20–30% in the final 2 weeks. The week before an exam is typically the most intensive. Use this calculator to plan your baseline and adjust upward as exams approach.
Does studying more hours always lead to better grades?
Not necessarily. Quality matters as much as quantity. Active recall (practice questions, flashcards, teaching concepts) is far more effective than passive re-reading. Breaks also improve retention — a 5-minute break every 45–50 minutes (Pomodoro technique) is evidence-backed.
